Bristol Ramblers Notices
Avon Area AGM 2012. To be held on Saturday 11 Feb 2012 at The Working Men’s Club, The Street, Radstock, BA3 3PR (Grid Ref ST 688547). Pre AGM Walk - four miles starting at the Working Men’s Club at 10:30 hrs. Food will be served from 12:30 in the Working Men’s Club and AGM Meeting will commence at 13:30. There is a car park belonging to the Club, and there is a large car park at the rear of the Club that can be accessed from Church Street. It has pedestrian access to the Working Men’s Club in the bottom corner. Bus routes from Bath stop in The Street at present, but road works begin in October for some time. Check winter timetables on Traveline.
Programme Correction: The meeting place for the walk on Saturday 10th March is at Blaise Castle CP not Kingsweston
We are planning a coach trip to the lovely Gower Peninsular on 8 July. There will be A and B walks. This will, however, only happen if there are enough advance bookings. The departure will be from Great George Street at 8am, and the estimated cost is £20 (with a discount if we fill the coach). Nigel’s Gower walk in 2011 was, by common consent, one of the walks of the year. Both walks will be linear and will make the most of the south Gower coast. Contact any member of the committee to book your place.

All public bodies are under great financial pressure. In Bristol, as elsewhere, there is
a risk of reductions in budgets for protecting and maintaining footpaths and for developing
facilities for walkers. The Committee has made representations to the Council, see: the letter
to Councillor Hopkins
"Spending Plans - investment in walking".
We would urge other members who have concerns to send their views to Gary Hopkins
(gary.hopkins@bristol.gov.uk), the
Executive Member responsible for these matters, or Neil
Harrison (neil.harrison@bristol.gov.uk),
Assistant Cabinet Member for Sustainability. See email reply from Neil Harrison here
- The campaigns section of the Ramblers' national website contains details of the national
Dead End campaign,
and how you might help.
- More generally, the Bristol City Council has
established Neighbourhood Forums covering the entire city,
to feed views in to Neighbourhood Partnerships.
These bodies are open to anyone, and have
the potential to influence local decisions about the walking environment. This will not be
everyone's cup of tea, but you should at least be aware of this opportunity to ask about what
is going on and to make your voice heard. Details, including times and locations for forum
meetings, are on the Council's website.

Help to shape the great outdoors
Posted October 19th
The government is seeking your views on nature and green space. From the streams to the hills,
from the streets to the heaths, from to the air you breathe to the wildlife you spot, tell the
government about your relationship with the natural environment. Take action
here. 3 reasons why you should take part in the government's
short survey:
(i) the outdoors cannot exist without people;
(ii) access and recreation is important for health and happiness
(iii) this is a rare chance for you to shape government policy
Please tell the government your own personal stories about how you value access to open tracts of countryside and other green spaces.
Find out more and take action here.
